Workers sort used plastic bottles at a recycling factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh on July 19, 2023. Employees help to prevent the bottles being discarded, sent to landfill, where they can take 1,000 years to biodegrade, or incinerated, which produces toxic fumes. As the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, is one of the most densely populated in the world and home to nearly 19 million people, Dhaka's annual per capita plastic consumption is more than three times the national average for urban areas and stands at 22.25 kg. About 646 tons of plastic waste is collected daily in Dhaka, which is 10 percent of all wastes generated in Bangladesh. Only 37.2 percent of the plastic waste in Dhaka is recycled. Floating plastic waste, which can survive for thousands of years in water, serves as mini transportation devices for invasive species, disrupting habitats. In addition, emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases will be reduced if recycling takes place of the production of new plastics. Recycling of plastic bottles not only keeps tons of waste out of landfills but also conserves natural resources such as trees, metal ores, and sand. Hundreds of pieces of dyed cloth are spread out across a field at Batik Village in Narayanganj, Bangladesh on September 3, 2023 for drying which looks like a Kingdom of Colors. Workers use hats for protection from the scorching heat because they have to constantly turn the colorful fabrics so that they dry perfectly in the sunlight. Beautifully embellished colorful cloths are created using the Indonesian technique called “Batik”. Parts of the design are blocked out by applying hot wax over them, then a dye is applied on top and the parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original color. About 1,500 pieces of cloth are laid to dry here every day. The process usually takes two hours, with each set of 350 pieces at a time to dry in temperatures that can reach over 36 degrees Celsius. The colorful cloths which sell for less than $3 (3 USD) are arranged on patches of grass to dry out completely as it is cheaper and more sustainable to dry them out in sunlight. Once the fabrics are dried, they are made into garments and sold worldwide. (Photo by Joy Saha/ZUMA Press Wire/EPA/EFE/Rex Features/Shutterstock)
