Paignton Zoo in UK on September 8, 2025 celebrates first Cassowary chick in 21 years and the only such birth in Europe this year. The chick is being raised by its father Madrid, following the species' natural behaviour where males assume all parenting duties. Cassowaries, large flightless birds native to Australia and New Guinea, can reach around 1.5 metres in height (with females growing closer to 2 metres) and possess sharp claws capable of inflicting serious injuries. Despite their dangerous reputation, the species demonstrates notable parenting behaviour, with fathers incubating eggs for approximately 50 days and raising offspring for up to 18 months. Amelia Gray the polar bear made her debut at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago on Wednesday 10 September 2025. The playful and curious Arctic beast explored all areas of her new habitat – including a plunge to explore her new pool – and enjoyed a variety of enrichment like rib bones. The eight-year-old recently arrived from Oregon Zoo and is a powerful reminder of the critical need to protect this vulnerable species, which research projects that up to two-thirds of the polar bear population could disappear by the end of the century.
