“The highlight of my trip to Alaska was kayaking near the Columbia glacier on Prince William Sound. Before heading to our kayaks, we walked up a rocky hillside to get our first view of this incredible landscape. I had never seen anything quite like it. “Welcome to my office!” shouted our guide”. “I was privileged to spend some time with the San people (or ‘bushmen’) of Namibia, an indigenous hunter-gatherer people, whose lands are slowly being squeezed by the march of civilisation. In gathering darkness, against the light of a fire, this photo illustrates their suffering”. (Photo by Nitish Upadhyaya/GuardianWitness)

“Feeling free at the world’s largest salt flat. After a 48-hour journey I would rather forget (including hugging Bolivian mountains on a treacherous coach journey) it was a relief to reach Salar de Uyuni. I remember sharp, glistening salt in between my toes and a warm sun that left my cheeks rosy for days”. (Photo by Holly Snelling/GuardianWitness)

Runner-up. “This flurry of motion is a midnight Easter procession in Zakynthos Town, on the Ionian island of Zakynthos, Greece. The congregations of various churches return to their homes carrying candles”. PAUL GOLDSTEIN, JUDGE: “This has terrific energy, is a gorgeous taupe colour and the slow shutter speed is masterly. This technique is often abused but works beautifully with the candles and the one face sharp in the melee. An accomplished image”. (Photo by Dominic Vacher/GuardianWitness)

Winner. “Marigold stringers in Veraval, Gujarat. Although fluorescent, the lighting lent this scene a painting-like quality. I love shooting shop fronts, especially in India, as the result often feels like you are looking through a window into another world”. PAUL GOLDSTEIN, JUDGE: “The composition is top notch and not arrived at by accident. The relaxed demeanour spells an intimate encounter between photographer and subjects rather than an intrusive ‘grab’ shot. But for me, the yellow of the produce matching the yellow bands of the flip flops was the icing. Outstanding”. (Photo by Christopher Wilton-Steer/GuardianWitness)
