Two zebras seen playing together at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve on December 11, 2016 in Pretoria, South Africa. Special animal encounters don’t only occur at big game reserves as they can happen anywhere and at any time. This was the case when Willie Kompagnie visited Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Pretoria, South Africa. “I was just on a day visit to the reserve with my mother and father on the day. We met there to spend the day in the reserve”, says Willie. The family encountered a group of zebras that were across the road. Willie explains how at first, he wasn’t sure if the zebras were playing or fighting. “After a while I decided that they were playing as the remained together after the encounter and it did not really look aggressive enough for a fight”. A baboon seen following a snarling leopard in an attempt to protect the rest of its troop on December 17, 2016 in Kruger National Park, South Africa. When there is a leopard and a baboon in the same territory and within a distance of each other, there is bound to be some trouble. Baboons are known to be fierce and at times are fearless of predators that prey on them. Leopards, lions and hyenas are among the animals that prey on baboons. When threatened, the male baboons in a troop would often be the ones to confront the predators. The website Out of Africa, describes the confrontation between the baboons and predators, where the baboons would form a line and strut in an intimidating manner towards the predator. This method of self-defence often puts the predators off. (Photo by Greatstock/Barcroft Images)

A moeche crab is seen at the Venice lagoon, Italy, April 22, 2016. The lagoon of this canal-laced Italian city is a fishing mecca. For a few days every spring and autumn, it yields a very particular kind of catch and culinary treat. “Moleche” or “moeche” as they are called in Venetian dialect are young crabs that have shed their baby shells and have yet to grow their adult ones. The renewal process takes only a few hours – a small window during which the Venice Lagoon fishers cast their nets. (Photo by Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters)
