Sentinel-1, a Synthetic Aperture Radar in C-band, carries an advanced radar instrument to provide an all-weather, day-and-night supply of continuous imagery of Earth's surface. As a constellation of two satellites orbiting 180 degrees apart, the mission images scan the entire Earth every six days. The mission benefits of numerous services that range from monitoring the Arctic sea-ice extent, a routine sea-ice mapping, a surveillance of the marine environment, including oil-spill monitoring and ship detection for maritime security, monitoring land-surface for motion risks, mapping of forests, water and soil management, and to support humanitarian aid mappings in crisis situations. Turkish troops could be used to help set up a secure zone in Syria, if there was an international agreement to establish such a haven for refugees fleeing Islamic State fighters, President Tayyip Erdogan said in comments published on Saturday. Militants still held their positions around 10 kilometres west of Kobane inside Syria, the Reuters witness said, with Kurdish positions the last line of defence between the fighters and the town. Kobane sits on a road linking north and northwestern Syria and Kurdish control of the town has prevented Islamic State fighters from consolidating their gains, although their advance has caused more than 150,000 Kurds to flee to Turkey since last week. French adventurer and researcher Stephane Rousson prepares his “Aerosail” on September 28, 2014, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, southeastern France prior to his planned attempt to cross the Mediterranean from Nice to Calvi, on the French Mediterraean island of Corsica. Aerosail is the result of Rousson and his partners' ambition to create an innovative, efficient, and silent maritime vehicle, only using the wind as means of propulsion. Its unique principle of flight allows the user to pilot like a sailboat an airship linked by a cable to a stabilized keel, called the Seaglider. The cable acts as the mast and the airship as the sail. Rousson is planning his crossing for the end of October 2014. (Photo by Valery Hache/AFP Photo)
