A vendor carries her products in a bucket on her head as she walks through the neighborhood of Jalousie, in the commune of Petion Ville, Port-au-Prince, on December 17, 2018. On the hills of Port-au-Prince, a chaotic jumble of structures stretches ever farther into the distance: Haiti's capital is suffering under the weight of high inflation, endemic corruption and a perilous drop in the value of its currency. Since Rodrigo Duterte became president last year, his brutal campaign against drugs has claimed thousands of lives. Human rights groups say he is guilty of crimes against humanity, yet that is scant comfort to those mourning loved ones. Here: Constantino de Juan’s seven children sit on a sofa that still bears the bullet hole from their father’s shooting. In this September 21, 2017, local villagers repair a fishing boat in Shah Porir Dwip, an island by the Bay of Bengal at Bangladesh’s southern tip. This island can mean both hope and death for the Rohingya Muslims who are desperate to escape the violence that has engulfed their lives in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. High tide or low, day or night, rough waters or calm, when they can find a boat, the Rohingya take their chance to flee to Bangladesh. More than 430,000 have left Myanmar in less than a month.
