Pencil Shaving Art by Marta Altes

When Marta Altes sharpens her pencil, she doesn’t see waste in the shavings – she sees possibilities. The graphic designer was originally trained in Barcelona before moving to England to pursue her MA in Children’s Book Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art. Her playful, simple pieces burst with child-like creativity, turning pencil shavings into a lion’s mane or a cape for a bullfighter. Stay tuned to the artist’s website for more additions to the series!

A girl holds her brother in her arm as black smoke rises after an oil well set on fire in the center of al-Kayyara town to the south of Daesh terror organization-held Mosul in Iraq on October 25, 2016. The oil well in the center of al-Kayyara town, which was set alight by retreating Daesh militants in advance of the Iraqi army's takeover of the town on August 24, 2016 has still not entirely been put out. The raw petrol which is still alight is creating black clouds above the city. The residents and wildlife beneath this polluting smoke cloud may find their health at risk. The effects of the fire in the town center on unprotected civilians' health can easily be seen on the hands and faces of children playing on the street. It is already one of the world’s most iconic cities, but this incredible collection shows how much Paris has changed over the course of the past century. The collection, by French photographer Julien Knez, shows Paris in the 1940s against a backdrop of how the same places look today. Knez says he put the striking collection together to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the city’s liberation from Nazi control in August 1944. Here: Soldiers outside the Hotel De Ville in the 1940s.
