The festival lasts for eight days with singing, mask dancing, and other rituals. Indra Jatra festival falls on the fourth day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadra as per the lunar calendar. Legends say that the Indra Jatra festival observes the victory of the gods over the demons to release Jayanta, the son of Lord Indra. Indra, the god of rain, is worshiped in this festival primarily celebrated by the Newar communities following both Hinduism and Buddhism. This celebration, also known as “El dia de las mujeres”, is a deep-rooted tradition in Castilla y Leon, especially in rural areas. The day of the Aguedas has its origin in the cult of Santa Agueda, and is celebrated every February 5. During this day, women are the protagonists and take over the city. For their part, the town councils give them the baton as a sign of authority. Around seven days of festivities are celebrated where the attendees dance, eat, sing, and even jump over a bonfire.
