A YouTube video of a chainsmoking Indonesian toddler inspired me to create this series, "Smoking Kids". The video highlighted the cultural differences between the east and west, and questioned notions of smoking being a mainly adult activity. Adult smokers are the societal norm, so I wanted to isolate the viewer's focus upon the issue of smoking itself. I felt that children smoking would have a surreal impact upon the viewer and compel them to truly see the acts of smoking rather than making assumptions about the person doing the act. ... ~Frieke Janssen

Smoke rises from the sauna as Eda Veeroja walks past with birch twigs at Mooska farm near the village of Haanja December 20, 2014. Smoke saunas are usually built without chimney and have a stove that rest on boulders where firewood is burnt until the room heats up. When the smoke is gone and the room reaches the right temperature, people sit inside and whisk each other with birch twigs. (Photo by Ints Kalnins/Reuters)

The detailed scenes trapped inside recycled glass bottles are made with just candle smoke. The artist burns the inside, then carefully etches away the residue, revealing imagery of trees, cars, and industrial landscapes within the confines of each bottle.
