2mm from death: A 13-year-old slipped on an icy school floor in China after a faulty heater had leaked overnight. Xiao Lin fell forward onto a hook which embedded in his eye. A school handyman sawed the hook off the wall to free the lad, leaving 5cm sticking out of his head. Doctors at his nearest hospital did not feel able to deal with the injury and sent him to another unit four hours away, where the sword was removed in a four hour operation. Another Chinese building site worker was skewered with steel rods which were fired out of a machine. Doctors, firemen and friends of the worker spent 13 minutes cutting off the rods outside his body before he was taken to the local hospital then transferred on to the provincial hospital for specialist treatment. Liu Mou, from China, had gastric ulcer surgery in 1974 and had frequently suffered stomach pains in subsequent years. He comments: “I thought it was my old stomach problems and each time I took stomach medication or anti-inflammation pills to relieve the pain”. (Photo by Rex Features)
