An electronic computer, called a DataTron, is fed a punched paper tap containing instructions on music composition. The idea is based on mathematical expression of melody – written laws that date back to Bach and Mozart. Technical specialist Douglas Bolitho and Dr. Martin Klein, of Pasadena, Cal., coupled the idea to electronics to come up with tunes by the basketsful. Bolitho and Klein said that the work is, “an experiment of mathematical importance only”, and that, "no computer will ever posess the esthetic gifts which are responsible for art." So you see, there's no need for budding young composers to worry. Douglas Bolitho, who helped develop the mathematical program which instructs the computer, starts the machine writing songs, July 31, 1956. (Photo by AP Photo)

Four hairdressers attending the National Beauty Trades Show in New York 'cool off' under hair driers in an air-conditioned room at the Hotel Statler on September 1, 1953 while Erma Van Wort, in a sable cape, shows them a new mobile coiffure. The hair driers' temperature is a mere 90 degrees, while the official thermometer outdoors measured 97. The new hairdo, achieved with free-flowing waves, is designed to direct eyes to the head - whatever the length of the controversial hemline.
