Swimming Pool Art Installation by Leandro Erlich

In one of the Museum’s courtyards is a swimming pool framed by a limestone deck. When seen from the deck, the pool appears to be filled with deep, shimmering water. In fact, however, a layer of water only some 10 centimeters deep is suspended over transparent glass. Below the glass is an empty space with aquamarine walls that viewers can enter. The work sets up an unfolding sequence of experiences—we view the pool through the glass wall enclosing the courtyard; from the deck, looking down into the pool; and from the interior of the pool, looking up. The Swimming Pool might hence be considered a place where, slowly, with time, different perspectives and perceptions of self and others all come to intersect.

International Coastal Cleanup Day is observed annually on the third Saturday of September and will occur on 19 September this year. The day was established to encourage global efforts to clean up garbage on beaches and coastal areas and raise awareness on protecting the world's oceans and waterways. According to a report released by the US-based nonprofit environmental advocacy group Ocean Conservancy on 08 September 2020, plastic food packaging topped the list of most common items found in beach trash. Close to five million food wrappers were collected in a single day during the International Coastal Cleanup Day in 2019. An approximate 11 million metric tons of plastic enters the ocean every year according to a 2016 analysis, affecting more than 800 marine species and causing contamination to human food chains and drinking water. The carcass of a yacare caiman lies in the dried-up river bed of the Pilcomayo river in Boqueron, Paraguay, August 14, 2016. In Paraguay, alongside the Pilcomayo River, black vultures flew over a shrinking pond where a group of crocodilian reptiles known as yacare caimans sought refuge. Water from the river, which divides Paraguay and Argentina in the area of the Gran Chaco, was scarce. This is not an uncommon sight in the region of General Diaz, about 700 kilometres (435 miles) northwest of the country's capital Asuncion, where the Pilcomayo's waters form lakes and streams that give life to capybaras, birds and caimans. “The river's situation is critical. No water is forecast to enter the basin until December, as happens every year”, said Alcides Gonzalez, a resident of the area. (Photo by Jorge Adorno/Reuters)

A performer wearing a lion mask performs the Ise Daikagura lion dance at the remote village of Yamanawa on February 08, 2021 in Ryuo, Japan. Ise Daikagura is a group of traditional Lion Dance performers who pray in front of farmers houses and businesses for good grain harvests and disease-free lives. Performers play sacred music using drums and flutes with two lion mask dancers. A lion mask is considered a symbol of God, who enters the house and performs in front of the Shinto God, a statue placed inside the house, mostly in the kitchen. These prayers are called “Kamodo Barai”. After the prayers, they are gifted with money, rice, sake and Japanese sweets from the householders. A group can travel for more than one hundred days to thousands of households and businesses throughout rural-villages in western Japan, and pray to those who are unable to visit the country’s most sacred shrine, the Grand Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture. The group started its performance in the Edo era between 1603 to 1868 according to Japanese history. The Japanese government designated it as an important folk cultural national property in 1981.
