“Weapons Instructor”, 2012. It’s a well known fact that the IDF trains some of the best soldiers in the world, but at the source of every good soldier lies an exceptional instructor – and that’s where Cpl. Daniella Stepanoe steps in. She travels from base to base training everyone from paratroopers to elite special forces units in the use of their weapons.

The festivity of the Maya comes from pagan rites and dates from the medieval age, appearing in ancient documents. It takes place every year in the beginning of May and celebrates the beginning of the spring. Girls between 7 and 11 years old are chosen as “Maya” and should sit still, serious and quiet for a couple of hours in altars on the street decorated with flowers and plants and afterwards they walk to the church with their family where they attend a ceremony. “The ripening crops eloquently signify that the scarecrow’s work is done. Few remain to see their task fulfilled because if they become entangled in the harvesting machinery it causes serious damage”. (Photo by Colin Garratt)

When Colin Garratt went to photograph the traditional sentinels of the British countryside, he found they ranged from the dapper to the downright sinister. “They are not from the anaesthetised world of the craft fair”, says Colin Garratt, “but are the direct descendants of the ancient spectres which have haunted the landscape for centuries”. The Scarecrow Exhibition is at Geddes Gallery, London, from 25 to 30 March. (Photo by Colin Garratt)

Corporals Verica Zlatevska (L) and Dragana Kitanovska (R) attend an honour guard training session at an army barracks in Skopje March 4, 2015. Macedonia's honour army battalion, the ceremonial uniformed guard that receives every foreign president, dignitaries and delegations, but also sees off and welcomes the head of state every time he leaves the country, has a different glow. For the first time in the history of Macedonia's army, the honour guard has two women in its ranks. There has not been an event in which one of them is not in the first row. Zlatevska joined the army in 2003, Kitanovska in 2006. Picture taken March 4, 2015. REUTERS/Ognen Teofilovski (MACEDONIA - Tags: MILITARY SOCIETY)
