The aurora borealis (left) alongside a strong thermal emission velocity enhancement, a rare aurora-like phenomenon named a STEVE in 2016 by scientists in Canada, can be seen over Bamburgh castle, in Northumberland on the North East coast of England on Sunday, November 5, 2023. The atmospheric optical phenomenon is caused by a flowing ribbon of hot plasma breaking through into the earth's ionosphere, appearing in the sky as a purple, red and white arc. The Aurora Borealis which put on a Spectacle is most usually associated with Scandinavian countries in Europe but is sometimes visible in the UK. It is rarely seen south of Scotland – but last night, September 18, 2023, it was at Sandsend on the North Yorkshire Coast. (Photo by Charlotte Graham/Rex Features/Shutterstock)
The Northern Lights appear in the sky in Svolvaer, Norway, on October 22, 2023. The Northern Lights occur due to the interplay between the sun and Earth's magnetic field, which propels electrons through the atmosphere at rapid velocities. (Photo by Manuel Romano/NurPhoto/Rex Features/Shutterstock)

The Northern lights made an appearance just before midnight on Sunday night, May 21, 2023 over Sycamore Gap in Northumberland, United Kingdom with the aurora pillars visible. Captured with a 13-second exposure, the lack of light pollution in the area made it possible to photograph. The Sycamore Gap tree is one of the most photographed in the country. It stands in a dip at Hadrian's Wall in the Northumberland National Park. (Photo by Ian Sproat/Picture Exclusive)

The picture dated November 5, 2023 shows the Aurora over Rollesby Broad in Norfolk, UK. The Aurora Borealis, form when charged particles from the sun penetrate the earth's magnetic field and collide with atoms and molecules to create bursts of light. It is most commonly spotted in Norway and Sweden but recently solar activity has been increasing with the light shows occasionally visible in the skies above the UK. The northern lights made a brief appearance over Stonehenge in Wiltshire on Saturday evening, November 4, 2023. The image consists of two photos, a 16-second exposure of the sky and a two-minute exposure of the foreground, merged together to reveal more detail than what the naked eye can see in darkness.
