“Liquid Emerald”. I stood at the base of Niagara Falls in Ontario Canada with my camera, tripod and ND filter and 10 million gallons of water per minute. My camera was soaking when I was done and didn't think I had achieved the effect I wanted, but later found out it was worth taking an involuntary shower compliments of mother nature to get this photo. Photo location: Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. (Photo and caption by Barry Hodgert/National Geographic Photo Contest)

“One chooses their happiness”. In November 2013 I spent 3 weeks traveling through turkey. Towards the end of my trip i was walking along the bosphorus when I saw these two men sitting and talking. neither spoke english but I asked if I could take their photos using a creative series of hand gestures. They obliged and as i snapped a few frames I was struck by the contrast between the two men – both relatively the same age but one dressed to the nines and seemingly just happy to be alive the other quite the opposite. Photo location: Istanbul, Turkey. (Photo and caption by Maranie Staab/National Geographic Photo Contest)

“Oceanic Flight”. While on a trip to unhook live sharks from fishermen's longlines, we were lucky enough to run into a massive school of mobula rays. The rays were moving quite fast and it was hard enough keeping up with them from the surface, let alone dive down to take a closer look. This photo was taken freediving to a depth of about 60 ft. Photo location: Baja, Mexico; Pacific Coast. (Photo and caption by Eduardo Lopez Negrete/National Geographic Photo Contest)

“The lion king”. Early one morning, we found this guy sunbathing with the gorgeous sunrise, as the wind was blowing his mane. He gave us a show, making sure we got him in every possible angle, and we sure did. What a beautiful and majestic animal. Photo location: Masai Mara, Kenya. “Travelling Girl”. She was shy at first and barely visible peering out the window, I simply waved and smiled and we shared many small moments and giggles. If I am able to somehow express how incredible the Sri Lankan people are it can be seen through this girl’s smile. Photo location: Hatton, Sri Lanka. “The lone fisher”. This dramatic light showed up shortly at Benijo Beach (Tenerife/Spain). The lonely fisherman adds a special something in this one. My personal favourite from our journey in spring 2014. The weather wasn´t always good, but I prefer clouds instead of a bright shining blue sky :). Photo location: Benijo Beach, Tenerife, Spain. “Conflict-free mining in Eastern Congo”. Mineral-Trade in Eastern Congo has been singled out as a source of finance for armed conflict. “Conflict-free mining in Eastern Congo”. Mineral-Trade in Eastern Congo has been singled out as a source of finance for armed conflict. An initiative made up of the industry, NGOs, international and national government organisations, has launched a pilot project, that is set to break up that link. The CFTI ensures that each mined ore receives a plastic tag with a bar core that corresponds to a certification document, so that the minerals extracted from it can be exported legally. Out of around 900 mines located in South Kivu, Kalimbi remains currently the only one which has internationally recognized traceability. Photo location: South Kivu, DR Congo. “Kiwi Sound”. This was taken at Milford Sound in New Zealand. I would say my jaw dropped at just about every place I visited in the country. This photo pretty much sums up my time in the country and makes you appreciate what the earth has to offer. Photo location: Milford Sound, New Zealand. “A Khmer Boxer during a break”. Khmer Boxing is a huge sport in Cambodia. And don't tell a Cambodian that it is just like Thai Boxing – you might get in trouble. Every weekend fights are held somewhere a little bit out of the city center of Phnom Penh. The fights are broadcasted on national television but the entrance is free. The atmosphere with the fighters giving their best and the crowd going crazy is great. Photo location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
