“Tranquility in a Storm”. While visiting Japan during Tsuyu (raining season) 2 summers ago, I ran into a building and waited in the observation deck to escape the rain. Instead of being amazed by the view, I was intrigued by how the pose of a tired tourist sitting on the railings mimicked the structural bracing above her. Photo location: Osaka, Japan. Instead of being amazed by the view, I was intrigued by how the pose of a tired tourist sitting on the railings mimicked the structural bracing above her. She managed to find a moment of tranquility by resting on the railings and enjoying the view out the clerestory windows while isolating and sheltering herself from the massive city filled with rain and chaos outside. The umbrella quickly reminded me why I was there in the first place. Photo location: Osaka, Japan. (Photo and caption by George Lin/National Geographic Photo Contest)

“The New Water”. People have long been drawn to Te Waihou. The river was an important thoroughfare and provided food and flax for local people and visitors alike. The reason for the blue colour (and visual clarity) of Te Waihou is the high optical purity of the water. Pure water is intrinsically blue in hue because it absorbs red light leaving only blue and (some) green light to be transmitted to the observer's eye. Photo location: Te Waihou Walkway, Putaruru, New Zealand. (Photo and caption by Abby Lovis/National Geographic Photo Contest)
