Respect, Kronotsky nature reserve, Russia. The photographer’s cat, Ryska – her name means little lynx in Russian – stands outside their cabin and with aggressive posturing warns off a fox. In winter, foxes would regularly visit the cabin searching for food. If one peered in at the window, possible when the snow was deep, Ryska would sit on the other side, fur raised, and growl. Wedding photographer, Josh Newton, has managed to turn a natural disaster into an amazing photo shoot opportunity. On June 7, 2014 Michael Wolber and April Hartley were getting ready to walk down the aisle in Rock Springs Ranch, Bend, Oregon, USA when firefighters alerted them to nearby wildfires gaining momentum and instructed them to flee to a safer location. Instead of leaving immediately, the wedding coordinator talked the firemen into letting the couple get married if they shortened the ceremony. “Everyone was on the edge of their seats”, says Newton, “it was so nerve racking!”. But the company's expertise with optics bleeds over into related markets – it's one of the science community's major suppliers of microscopes. And each year the company asks the community to send it some of their favorite images of tiny objects. A panel of scientists and journalists have chosen the best of this past year's submissions, which Nikon has placed on its Small World site.
