Japan is a country full of art. Much of this is housed in museums and galleries, but others are right under our feet. We speak, of Japan’s peculiar obsession with manhole covers. Almost anywhere in the country you can find manhole covers with spectacular grounds, each more beautiful and complex than the previous. In recent years, S. Morita photographer has traveled around Japan and leave us this great gathering on the beautiful and artistic Japanese manhole covers.

Morita photographer has traveled around Japan and leave us this great gathering on the beautiful and artistic Japanese manhole covers.

久米小百合 (Sayuri Kume) – 異邦人 A Foreigner (Ihoujin) – Covered by チャラン・ポ・ランタン (Charan-Po-Rantan). Charan-Po-Rantan is a sister duo that has an “exuberant, alternative-cabaret-meets-circus vibe” as described by Wall Street Journal, comprised of Momo on vocals, and her older sister Koharu on the accordion.

“Asaro from the Eastern Highlands”. The mudmen could not cover their faces with mud because the people of Papua New Guinea thought that the mud from the Asaro river was poisonous. So instead of covering their faces with this alleged poison, they made masks from pebbles that they heated and water from the waterfall, with unusual designs such as long or very short ears either going down to the chin or sticking up at the top, long joined eyebrows attached to the top of the ears, horns and sideways mouths. A tale of two foxes. Surprising behaviour, witnessed in Wapusk national park, on Hudson Bay, Canada, in early winter. Red foxes don’t actively hunt Arctic foxes, but where the ranges of two predators overlap, there can be conflict.
