Around 100 water voles are being reintroduced into the National Trust’s Malham Tarn in North Yorkshire this weekend. This is the first time the endangered mammals have been seen in the area for 50 years, since the original colony was wiped out by mink in the 1960s. Once a common sight, water vole numbers have dropped by almost 90% in recent years. (Photo by Richard Rayner/North News & Pictures Ltd for National Trust)
